[Guide] BFA Guide to Optimizing Timewalking Gear

Timewalking is a great event that lets you get nostalgic experiencing old dungeons again at a normal difficulty. Doing them earn you timewarped badges which can net you tons of great rewards, such as timewalking-specific mounts, toys, pets, transmogs, or cash them in for reputation with various old factions which themselves can net you more mounts, toys, pets, and transmogs!

This is a BFA guide to optimizing your timewalking gear, since I haven't seen anyone else post one, and BFA has changed a lot of what was once considered optimal. Please feel free to correct any of my information or add to it and I will edit in the information into this post.

This guide is focused on optimzing the damage output of TANKS and DPS. The faster you kill the mobs, the faster you finish the dungeon. For this reason you want to maximize your AOE damage potential!

Here's what every timewalking gear set should take advantage of:

Legion Legendaries!
While your legion artifacts are turned off, your legendaries still work, and boy oh boy are they powerful here! Pick your two best AOE DPS legendaries and put them on. Hello again, Sephuz!

Tier Bonuses from Legion still work!
BFA may have removed tier set bonuses, but they're still fully powered in timewalking! The best tier sets for dungeons back in Legion will still be the best in timewalking. For example, Havoc Demonhunters will have a grand ol' time obliterating dungeons with the 4-piece Felreaper set.

Using legion legendaries and the best legion tier set bonuses are the biggest things you can do to optimize your timewalking gear.

Other Legendaries are good too!
Older legendaries have their set bonuses turned off and their procs nerfed to the ground, but the amount of stats they provide when you include their gem sockets make them slightly better than the competition: the MoP legendary cloaks like Xing-Ho, Breath of Yu'lon, the Cata caster staff Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest, the Cata rogue daggers Fangs of the Father, and the WOTLK two-handed Shadowmourne unfortunately aren't as good as they used to be but they're still just good enough to be BiS.

Heart of Azeroth is BiS neck!
Strangely enough, Heart of Azeroth scales very well down in timewalking, making it your BiS neck piece by a mile -- sorry, Prizerock Neckband, you had a good run.

Azerite Pieces Probably BiS Too?
As for Azerite Helm / Shoulder / Chest, I simply don't know if the traits make them better or worse than other gear options, but assuming their traits scale well in timewalking they should be BiS outside of the best Legion legos and tier bonuses.

WoD Pre-Legendary Ring!
Before BFA at least, the version of the WoD ring right before it becomes legendary (e.g. Spellbound Runic Band of Infinite Preservation) was a BiS ring for timewalking because the proc was still quite good. You didn't want the final legendary version because, like all the other legendaries, Blizzard is anti-fun and nerfed it. I don't know if it's still BiS in BFA, but maybe it is?

WOTLK Ashen Band! The Ashen Band of whatever your spec is (example, Ashen Band of Endless Destruction) has been another great timewalking ring for a long time(!) but I haven't tested it yet in BFA to confirm it hasn't been nerfed. Do note that this is from WOTLK so it won't scale up for CATA/MOP timewalking.

Gems are truly outrageous!
Gems used to be the name of the game when it came to optimizing timewalking gear, with gems greatly boosting the amount of stats you could get in each gear slot. In BFA it seems like the gap has closed significantly, but they're still superior choices for those looking to optimize as much as possible. Once you've filled up slots with all my other recommendations, you might as well fill your remaining slots with gear that has the most sockets possible. Nearly all the best gear options in terms of number of sockets come from Mists of Pandaria, specifically Siege of Orgrimmar and Throne of Thunder raids. Here's what you're looking for in terms of sockets:

Helm: +2 sockets (SoO / ToT)

Shoulder: +2 sockets (SoO / ToT)

Cloak: +1 socket (SoO / ToT)

Chest: +3 sockets (SoO / ToT)

Wrist: +1 socket (SoO / ToT) or +2 sockets (crafted gear by CATA professions)

Hand: +2 sockets (SoO / ToT)

Belt: +2 sockets, +3 when you use a Living Steel Belt Buckle

Legs: +2 sockets (SoO / ToT)

Feet: + sockets (SoO / ToT)


Additionally, Engineers have access to MoP helms with +3 sockets called X Retinal Armor (example that used to be BiS but probably are no longer worth it when compared to Legion Legendaries and Azerite Helms. However, there's still a trinket with three slots, Ghost Iron Dragonling, which is still a very good trinket! The proc is meh but the stats are sweet.

Enchantments! Enchantments still work in timewalking and you should make sure that every piece of gear you can enchant is enchanted. Your older equipment can be enchanted with older enchantments and unlike BFA where you can only enchant your rings and weapon, access to previous expansions lets you enchant basically every slot except for your helm and trinkets! So enchant all things possible!

Trinkets? I have no idea which trinkets are best in timewalking right now. The safest choice is pick whatever your best AOE trinkets are in BFA and run with those. There's also Ghost Iron Dragonling which is another safe one.

2-set bonus items? There's some 2-set bonus items that are still active; I assume only BFA/Legion are still active. Some could still be good, like the ones from Court of Stars + Arcway (example). Again, I'm not sure if any are good enough for timewalking, but they're worth considering!

TLDR: Grab your best two AOE DPS Legion Legendaries. Wear your best AOE DPS Legion 2-set or 4-set tier bonus. Wear your Heart of Azeroth and Azerite Gear. You're pretty much 95% optimized for timewalking!

[Guide] Quick Farm of Island Expeditions

How to farm the island for loot, no tank.
  • Kill the rare, elite-rare, and especially named rares for chances at loot. Each rare spawn at set locations on the island, if there is a rare at that location.
  • Circle the outer island rim on the ocean with a water mount to check for rares and then move inland. Use stealth classes to scout the inner island, such as rogues, hunters, and druids.
  • Rares killed cause stage 2 and stage 3 to occur. Stage 2 and 3 are not based on time or AP gathered.
  • Skip the azerite elementals and mining.
  • Skip the old, small, reinforced, and common named treasure boxes on the ground.
  • Spend dubloons on items to kill faster.
  • Dubloon items are BoA, mailable, and stay from week to week.
  • STAGE 2 azerite elementals do not have loot tables. The ore that spawns with them does not have loot tables.
  • STAGE 3 spawns the boss plus 2 - 3 rare elites, usually with SPECIAL named treasure chests. Kill the rare elites and loot the SPECIAL named chests.
  • Looting the fiery chest despawns the volcanos. The fire on the ground counts as fire, don’t stand in it.
  • Rares and elite rares all have similar attack patterns. Move out of the AoE, frontal cleave, and interrupt cast times. Some cannot be stunned and have DR similar to players.


How to farm the island, with tank/healer.

  • Pull packs up to an elite-rare and AoE down. Or pull the entire island and AoE down. Find the boss or 3 packs of newly spawns rares, AoE down. Roughly 4 - 6 minutes per island.
  • If you pull too much, you can be combo’d down by elite rares casting stuns and AoE abilities. Get aggro and kite if necessary.



How loot, AP, and XP work

  • Mining does not have a loot table.
  • Loot can be given regardless of a win or loss.
  • AP for necklace and XP is given at a lower rate on a loss.
  • AP for weekly progression is retained on a loss.
  • If you level to 120 on the island, only AP gained after 120 counts towards weekly progression.
  • There is no daily loot table lockout. You can loot the same item multiple times per character per day.
  • Not all loot is available every island cycle.
  • Everyone can get different loot, just like a dungeon.
  • Loot is very rare.



Pretty sure about this

  • Theme of the rare matters. Barnaby and the drunk crab drop from pirate rares.
  • Unique trash mobs, such as small water elementals, have loot table with the Zephyr pets. There isn’t always a rare with them, kill it anyway.
  • There might be stuff in the ocean. Never explored or seen anything, doesn’t mean it isn’t there.
  • Bosses often but not always come with 2 themed chests to loot which also have a loot table.
  • Sacks of azerite do not have a loot table since they are common named treasure.
  • Doing the quests, such as unlocking NPC cages, moving frogs off people, and healing NPCs, have a loot table.
  • AI tagging and killing rares does not add to your loot table.
  • Difficulty doesn’t matter.
  • Special treasure, such as inside clamshells, doesn’t have a loot table since they aren’t special named chests.
  • Some loot is more common than others, such as pirate hats. Pets are more common than mounts. Mounts are the rarest.
  • Dubloon pouches are independent of the loot tables on rares.
  • Rare Trash. Pet loot table is on regular and elite mobs themed like the pet. False Knucklebump drops from ape creatures that replace the spawn of creatures normally there; for example, instead of pig mobs there will be a small pack of ape mobs.

Small things of note

  • You do not need to be 120 to get loot.
  • The red X's on the map represent azerite spots from rares or quests, including the azerite elemental in stage 2. Try to kill these first.
  • QUEST items are not always needed. Moving the log is done by clicking. Healing with class abilities replaces the need for the poultice.
  • Rotten and Soggy chests appear slightly different than normal chests as the top looks like it wants to burst open. These spawn the Pandaria air, earth, water, and fire elementals or woodland sprites.
  • The more rares killed by either team, the more AP is gained, which is why it appears like AP gains cause stage 2 and 3.
  • Loot is rare. People have ran islands for 20 minutes and had drops, others run it for 4 hours a day every day and get AP and rep quests.
  • Be nice to randoms. Some are there to farm AP and get out. Some are completely new to islands and there's no hints in game as to how they work, outside of winning via AP collection. Not everyone reads the chat log to see trash is 2 to 8 AP and elite rares are 300 AP.
  • Use the premade group finder to find people to group with for rare farming strategies!
  • Non-elite and elite non-rare mobs also have a loot table, though the drop rates are understandably considerably lower. (I can confirm this one due to the yeti mount dropping off of non-rare craghorn yetis)
  • Orbs are a super important mechanic that most people don't seem to understand fully. When elites are killed the orb they drop not only heals for a LOT of health, if anyone has died but not released it also instantly resurrects them.
